It's "devil", actually

As the party was just arriving at the foot of the Mountains of Wind, a doorway suddenly opened before them, and out of it barreled a massive, nine-foot devil. Despite his sudden and unexpected appearance and his rather intimidating stature, the devil was quite mild-mannered and polite.
